The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. 'Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own' The TimesĮqual Rites is the first book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order. 'If you've never read a Discworld novel, what's the matter with you?' Guardian With Granny's help, Esk sneaks her way into the magical Unseen University and befriends apprentice wizard Simon.īut power is unpredictable, and these bright young students soon find themselves in a whole new dimension of trouble.

Thankfully Granny Weatherwax, the Discworld's most famous witch, has plenty of experience ignoring the status quo. So when the wizard Drum Billet accidentally passes on his staff of power to an eighth daughter of an eighth son, a girl called Eskarina (Esk, for short), the misogynistic world of wizardry wants nothing to do with her. 'They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.'Įverybody knows there's no such thing as a female wizard. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan. BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy ( Love Actually Pirates of the Caribbean Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz ( Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Just wish I could get Jingo somehow. The audiobook of Equal Rites is narrated by Indira Varma ( Game of Thrones Luther This Way Up). I will always keep my earlier audiobooks with Nigel and Stephen. There are exceptions, of course but I feel that Nigel and Stephen were so good because they weren't in any way afraid of making a fool of themselves to get the right voice for Fred Colon or Ridcully. I have always felt that actors trained in comedy (or at least who have done a lot of comedy in their career) are better at voices than those who are simply dramatic actors. Twoflower, Rincewind, Bravd, Ymor, Blind Hugh, Broadman, Cripple Wa, etc. Okay, so Colin seems to be pretty good with different voices. I am hopeful for Andy Serkis with Small Gods, we'll see. I have started The Colour of Magic and I like Colin Morgan's voice but I haven't gotten to his character voices yet. That all having been said, the first of the new batch of reading I got was Hogfather and I felt Sian Clifford was at least competent, but not really very good at making the character voices all that different from each other.

Never did get a chance to hear Tony Robinson, who is adored by most. Also, I disliked the two Celia Imrie books. I have been listening to Nigel and Stephen's readings for years now, so for one thing, I'm probably biased that way.
